INELASTIC SCATTERING OF DEUTERONS ON SEVERAL ISOTOPES OF CHROMIUM, ZINC, AND TIN

The differential cross section was measured for the inelastic scattering of 13.6-Mev deuterons on the following nuclei: Cr/sup 50/(0.79 Mev), Cr/sup 52/ (1.42 Mev), Zn/sup 64/ (0.98 Mev), Zn/sup 65/ (1.02 Mev), Zn/sup 70/ (1.0 Mev), and Sn/sup 116/ (1.2 and 2.3 Mev). The scattered deuterons were detected with a CsI scintillation spectrometer by using the dE/dX vs. E method. The experimental differential cross sections were compared with calculations from the theories of Huby and Newns and of Mullin and Guth. Neither of the two calculations was found to fit the data at all angles. The position of the peaks, however, predicted from theory coincided well with the measured maxima in the angular distribution.
