RESTORATION PROCESSES IN THE MUCOUS MEMBRANE OF THE DUODENUM AFTER INJURY BY RADIATION (in Russian)

Changes in the mucous membrane of the duodenum were followed in 111 rats from 0 hours to 15 days after administering a single, Co/sup 60/ dose of 900 r. The survival of the rats was 50% after 11 to 14 days. Parts of the duodenum were fixed in formaldehyde and wax, and paraffin sections 5 to 7 mu were stained with iron hemitoxylin, eosin, red aniline dye, methyl green, and other reagents for the hematological studies. The mitotic coefficient dropped from a normal value of 5.4% to a low value of 0.05% a few hours after the irradiation in the epithelial cells of the mucous membrane. The mitotic coefficient increased to 1% after a few days. On the second day, destructive processes were noted which resulted in the loss of the entire epithelial covering of the duodenum and inflammation in the mucous membrane with a temporary disappearance of the villi. Restoration processes in the epithelium began on the third day with an increase in activity of the crypt cells from 2% to a final 5.7%. The epithelium began to differentiate and reform. The surface of the duodenum became almost smooth. New villi appeared in places. This period of intensive restorative changes in the duodenum coincides with the beginning of severe radiation sickness with bleeding in the animal. On the 10th day, the crypts and villi were normal in appearance and structure, even though 50% of the animals died from the severe radiation sickness on the 11th to 14th day. (TTT)
