THE INCORPORATION OF RADIOACTIVE PHOSPHORUS BY STRUCTURES OF THE HUMAN OVARY (in Italian)

The possibility that P/sup 32/ treatment of women of childbearing age may cause selective irradiation of follicular elements, and thus cause genetic damage, was investigated by radioautographic examination of the ovaries of women removed 48 hr after intravenous injection of 2 mu C P/sup 32/ per kg body wt. The relation of the amount of P/sup 32/ incorporated by various structures to the phases of the ovarian cycle was studied in particular. No uptake by the primordial follicles was noted. The granulosa cells of the maturing follicle showed a moderate uptake and those in the ripe follicle a marked uptake. Minor radioactivity was seen in the thecae interna and externa of ripe follicles, and little was present in atretic follicles. Uptake by corpora lutea and by the interstitial tissue was also low. However, on the basis of the appreciable incorporation of P/sup 32/, presumably in the nucleic acids of granulosa cells, in the proximity of the developing ovocyte, it was concluded that there is substantial risk of genetic injury to the ovum in women receiving this isotope.
