DECLINE OF ANTIBODY AND IMPAIRED ANAMNESIS FOLLOWING X-RAY

Journal Article · · Journal of Immunology (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4634619
Experiments were conducted in rabbits immunized with bovine serum albumin and x irradiated with 400- or 500-r, whole-body doses to show the effect of irradiation given between 2 widely spaced injections of protein antigen on 3 aspects of the antibody response: the rate of continued antibody production reflected by the level of circulating antibody, the subsequent anamnestic response to an injection of antigen, and the avidity of the antibody produced. The effect of x rays on the antibody level differed in the primary and secondary responses. When x ray was delivered during the primary response, a decline in antibody production was evident. That antibody was still being produced in the irradiated animals was evident from a comparison of the antibody half-life (15 to 38 days) with the 5 to 8 day half-life of passively administered antibody. Irradiation was without effect when given during the declining antibody phase of the secondary response. In either case, the antibody response to a subsequent antigenic injection was greatly inhibited. Irradiation did not alter the change in antibody avidity occurring during the primary and secondary responses. (BBB)
