ABS>AET offered good protection to the gastrointestinal tract of whole- body x irradiated mice exposed to 1500 r by preserving from radiation damages a sufficient number of intestinal crypt cells that allow a good recovery of the small intestine mucosa. In the non-protected mice all measurements showed that on 4th day the small intestine mucosa was completely destroyed. At the same time, in protected mice all measurements were normal. Only the esterases, although the small intestine mucosa appeared histologically normal, did not recover completely by the l0th day. Moreover, it seems possible by giving l8 mg of AET orally, 5 minutes, or 4 mg 30 minutes before irradiation to protect selectively the small intestine against x irradiation damage. After a 1500 r x- ray exposure the small intestine mucosa showed a good recovery, but all mice developed a bone marrow syndrome and died by the sixth day. AET and the most active protective compounds were, however, not able to protect the small intestine of mice above 2500 r. (P.C.H.)
