Engineering irformation is summarized for shelters to protect against the effects of nuclear explosions. Group, family, and emergency-type shelters are considered. structural materials, shielding requirements, ventilation equipment, electrical equipment, water supplies, the protective effects of conventional structures and various shelter designs, blast protection, fire protection, fallout protection, and the psychological effects of shelter occupation are discussed. Protection against chemical and biological warfare agents is also discussed briefly. (C.H.)
