A general description of the optics of the CERN 2-m hydrogen bubble chamber is given. The chamber is illuminated by three demountable flashtubes with the help of a condensing lens system. The requirements for the light sources and the properties of the prototype are discussed, which combine high intensity (up to 2500 J) with short flash duration (200 mu sec), small size of the emitting plasma (15-mm diam) and long life (more than 40,000 discharges at 1000 J). The condenser consists of three units, each with two plano-convex lenses, one of them having aa aspherical surface. Theoretical values of the residual aberrations as well as experimental results are given. A short description of the windows and the problem of their antireflection coating is added. (auth)
