IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO SOLID MODERATOR ARRANGEMENTS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS
A solid-moderator arrangement of square cross section is patented. The arrangement consists of parallel vertical columns of moderator rods having a large vertical dimension relative to the side of their square cross section. The rods have axial channels, and clearances are provided between each column. The columns are arranged in 2 coaxial groups, the columns in the center having a smaller cross section than the outer columns. The columns consist of a series of single rods on top of each other separated by a parallelepiped briquette of moderator material of the same cross section as the rods. The briquettes have axial channels coaxial with that of the rods and form horizontal layers in the moderator arrangement. The columns are connected together by a means such as keys and keyways at the levels of the briquettes. (M.P.G.)
