IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO MODERATOR CORE STRUCTURES FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4783319
The structure of the solid moderator comprises a plurality of adjacent columns, each consisting of a series of square section graphite blocks and tile members alternately piled. The blocks in one layer are spigotted to the blocks of the next block layer by the tile members which have holes in alignment with holes in the block in order to form a reactor channel within the column. The stabilization of the core is secured by a combination of corner keys and side face keys engaging keyways provided in the tile members in order to connect adjacent tile members. The corner keys are preferably of cruciform shape adapted to engage keyways formed parallel to the respective diagonal of each of groups of four adjacent tile members, while the side face kcys are preferably of rectangular or square section engaging keyways formed at right angles to the respective side faces.
