In a moderator core structure, graphite blocks are arranged such that growth or contraction is permitted in the individual blocks. The axes of the reactor channels formed by borings in the blocks remain substantially fixed with respect to a common reference. This moderator structure comprises a plurality of lines of moderator blocks, adjacent lines being spaced from one another. The blocks are of hexagonal or octagonal section and are provided with axial keyways on their side faces while keys are placed in the keyways to connect opposite faces of adjacent blocks, thus restraining their movement perpendicular to the axis of the structure.
