ALPHA DECAY OF NEUTRON-DEFICIENT ASTATINE ISOTOPES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4626589
The alpha particle and gamma ray spectra of neutrondeficient isotopes of astatine were studied with a magnetic alpha-particle spectrograph and alpha-gamma coincidence apparatus. A new alpha-emitting isotope, At/sup 202/, was identified, as were new isomers of At/sup 204/ and At/sup 206/. The isotopes observed, their half-lives, and associated alpha group energies are tabulated. Alpha groups with energies of 6.412 plus or minus 0.009 and 6.485 plus or minus 0.0l1 Mev (relative intensities about 60 and 40%, respectively) and an overall half-life of 0.9 plus or minus 0.2 min are tentatively assigned to At/ sup 200/. Alphagamma coincidence measurements have shown 68-kev photon to be in coincidence with the 5.696-Mev At/sup 204/ alpha particles. Upper limits were set for photons in coincidence with the other alpha groups studied. No evidence was found for the alpha decay of the 25-min At/sup 204/ and 2.9-hr At/sup 206/ electron-capture activities that were previously studied. (auth)
