STUDY OF THE REACTIONS (p,$alpha$xn) ON THORIUM BOMBARDED WITH 155-Mev PROTONS (in French)

S>From measurements of the cross sections of several isotopes of polonium (206 to 210) and astatine 206 to 211) produced by bombardment of thorium nuclei by 150-Mev protons, information was obtained on the mechanism of these reactions. It was assumed that polonium and astatine are produced through rapid alpha decay from neutrondeficient radium and actinium isotopes. These nuclei are formed by spallation (p, alpha xn) and (p,p alpha xn) reactions where x may be up to 14. For example, the calculated cross section without fission for (p, alpha 14n) is 2.8 mb, and the experimental value was found to be 3 plus or minus 1. (auth)
