THE EFFECT OF AMINOETHYLISOTHIOUREA (AET) ON THE RADIO-INDUCED MUTATION RATE IN E COLI (in German)

Aminoethylisothiourea was added to E. coli suspension 15 min. before irradiation with doses of 40,000 and 80,000 r. The effects of AET on the inactivation and the rate of the radioinduced back mutation to prototropy were determined. The results show a significant radioprotective effect of AET. The mutation rate, however, was increased by the application of AET before the irradiation. An interpretation of this amplification of the mutation rate is not available at the present. (J.S.R.)
