THE EFFECT OF 5-HYDROXYTRYPTAMINE (SEROTONIN) ON THE RADIATION-INDUCED MUTATION RATE IN E. COLI (in German)

The protective eifects of serotonin against radioinduced mutations were investigated in E. coli. Suspensions of E. coli were exposed to total doses of 40,000 r at a dose output of 800 r/min. Ten minutes before the irradiation, sufficient amounts of serotonin were added to give a 0.01 M solution. Determination of the effects of serotonin on the radioinduced inactivation rate showed that there was a significant radiation-protective effect of this compound.
