The paper presents the results of an experimental and theoretical study of the preparation and burning process of pulverized coal and clean coal slurries at high pressure, including the air supply. The aim is to obtain optimal utilization of the combustion chamber volume. Other topics investigated deal with the separation of sticking ash from the combustion gases using multicyclones and the protection of the turbine blades. The existing experimental equipment, which includes a chamber with impinging jets, a channel for the devices needed for ash-separation and a one-stage turbine with air-cooled blades, as well as the planned installation for coal beneficiation, the preparation of coal-water slurries (CWS) and the study of its combustion are described. The combustion stability of pulverized coal and CWS is of primary importance for the burning process. The particle size range of pulverized coal is usually below 150 {mu}m; most advantages and drawbacks of this fuel stem from the fact that small particles heat up rapidly, producing direct contact with oxygen, so that the burning area is large, like in liquid sprays; the high porosity of the fuel allows the chamber to reach elevated temperatures up to 2000 K. Steady burning of low volatility coal powder, anthracite and clean CWS was achieved. This can be exploited as part of a combined cycle powerplant, using coal or slurry based fuel for power generation. A description of the planned facilities is presented.
