Coal-oil slurry preparation

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5528801
A pumpable slurry of pulverized coal in a coal-derived hydrocarbon oil carrier which slurry is useful as a low-ash, low-sulfur clean fuel, is produced from a high sulfur-containing coal. The initial pulverized coal is separated by gravity differentiation into a high density refuse fraction containing the major portion of non-coal mineral products and sulfur, a lowest density fraction of low sulfur content and a middlings fraction of intermediate sulfur and ash content. The refuse fraction is gasified by partial combustion producing a crude gas product from which a hydrogen stream is separated for use in hydrogenative liquefaction of the middlings fraction. The lowest density fraction is mixed with the liquefied coal product to provide the desired fuel slurry. Preferably there is also separately recovered from the coal liquefaction LPG and pipeline gas.
