Coal liquefaction process utilizing coal/CO/sub 2/ slurry feedstream

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5633519
This patent describes a process for hydrogenation and liquefaction of coal utilizing a coal/CO/sub 2/ slurry feedstream for producing hydrocarbon liquid and gas products. The process consists of: (a) pressurizing particulate coal to an intermediate pressure of at least about 500 psig and mixing it with liquid carbon dioxide to provide a flowable coal/carbon dioxide slurry feedstream containing at least about 50 W % coal; (b) further pressurizing the coal/ CO/sub 2/ slurry and feeding it and hydrogen separately into a reaction zone containing an ebullated catalyst bed maintained at 650{sup 0}-850{sup 0}F temperature, 1000-4000 psig hydrogen partial pressure and a coal feed rate of 10-100 lab coal/hr ft/sup 3/ reactor volume, and producing an effluent material containing hydrocarbon gas and liquid fractions; (c) separating the gas and liquid fractions, and recovering CO/sub 2/ and hydrogen from the gas fraction for recycle in the process; and (d) removing unconverted coal and ash from the hydrocarbon liquid fraction, and distilling the remaining hydrocarbon liquid to produce gas and low boiling hydrocarbon liquid products.
