Catalytic two-stage coal hydrogenation and hydroconversion process

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5574040

This patent describes a process for two-stage catalytic hydrogenation of coal to produce low-boiling hydrocarbon liquid and gaseous products. The process consists of: mixing particulate coal and a process-derived recycled hydrocarbon slurrying liquid in a coal slurrying step to provide a flowable slurry, and feeding the slurry at a temperature below about 650{sup 0}F into a pressurized first stage back-mixed catalytic reaction zone containing coal-derived liquid and hydrogen and an ebullated bed of particulate hydrogenation catalyst, the particulate catalyst having effective diameter of 0.030-0.125 inch; passing the coal and hydrogen gas upwardly through the first stage back-mixed ebullated bed of particulate hydrogenation catalyst, the catalyst containing an active metal component wherein the metal in the component is selected from the group consisting of cobalt, iron, molybdenum, nickel, tin, tungsten and mixtures thereof deposited on a support material, the catalyst bed being maintained at 650{sup 0}-800{sup 0} 1 F. temperature and 1000-4000 psig hydrogen partial pressure and space velocity of 10-60 lb coal/hr ft/sup 3/ reactor volume to rapidly heat the coal and catalytically hydrogenate it and recycled solvent with minimal retrogressive dehydrogenation reactions to produce a partially hydrogenated and hydroconverted coal-derived effluent material containing less than about 6 W % C/sub 1/-C/sub 3/ hydrocarbon gases, 15-25 W % 650{sup 0}F-light liquid fraction and 60-70 W % 650{sup 0}F + hydrocarbon material fraction.
