A series of four projects, under the sponsorship of Penelec, New York State Electric and Gas Corp., the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority (PEDA), the Pennsylvania Electric Energy Research Council (PEERC) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), have been underway to determine the optimum formulation for co-firing fine coal as Coal Water Slurry(CWS) with pulverized coal. The projects are being conducted to provide an optimum method for utilizing fine coal without expensive drying. The four projects involve the following: (1) Laboratory tests to determine the optimum CWS formulation for the test coal; (2) combustion tests of the CWS fuel, co-fired with pulverized coal in a 1.5 million Btu/hour combustor at Penn State University; (3) Pilot scale fine coal cleaning and CWS production studies at the Homer City CWS pilot plant; (4) CWS co-firing tests at the 32 NW Seward Station No. 14 Boiler. Work has been conducted on a lab scale to determine the rheology and stability of 50 to 60% solids CWS. Small scale combustion tests have been conducted to establish the feasibility of burning low solids CWS in a co-firing mode with pulverized coal (pc). Pilot fine coal cleaning and CWS production tests are in progress to establish engineering design parameters for scale up. Planning and engineering have been initiated for a large scale test in which No. 14 Boiler at the Seward Station will be converted to a dual-fuel firing boiler. Testing of the combustion of low solids CWS in a co-firing mode is scheduled to begin in the fall 1993. This paper summarizes the results achieved to date and discusses the current and future CWS project activities.
