A Portable Scaler

Journal Article · · Health Physics (England)
A versatile, battery-operated, transistorized scaler was built for measurements in the field. It has a count capacity of 108-1 counts from three transistorized decades and a mechanical register. The scaler has a double pulse resolving time of 7 µsec but is limited to 3 x 103 counts per second by the mechanical register. Positive and negative input pulses greater than 10 millivolts can be counted, and a test signal is available for checking the circuits. Pulses up to 25 volts can be tolerated without damaging the input circuits. Timed runs from 10 seconds to 10 minutes are possible using a built-in timer which is reproducible to better than 0.5%. A regulated high voltage supply is included which is variable from 200 to 1500 volts with sufficient current to operate a high resistance photo-multiplier tube dynode voltage divider. A special input is provided for use with halogen-quenched geiger tubes. The rechargeable battery will operate the scaler for 20 hrs between charges, and a charger is included. The unit is 6 in. high by 9 in. long by 5 in. deep and weighs 10 lbs.
