Secondary isotope effects K/sub a/(H)/K/sub a/(D) for the isotopic acid pairs 4-X-C/sub 6/H/sub 4/CH/sub 2/COOH/4-X- C/sub 6/H/sub 4/-CD/sub 2/COOH(X = H, NO/sub 2/, OMe) were determined at T = 25 deg C by conductance measurements. This has involved the redetermination of the dissociation constants for the nondeuterated acids and in the case of X = NO/sub 2/, OCH/sub 3/, the new K/ sub a/ values are to be preferred. The K/ sub a/ of aceti c acid was also redetermined as a check on the reliability of the new data. The three isotope effects are shown to be much small than might have been anticipated on the basis of the emf measur ments on the pair PHCH/sub 2/COOH/PhCD/sub 2/COOH. (auth)
