The authors have undertaken to examine the contributions of the electronic effect to changes in the ..gamma..(OH) and ..gamma..(C=O) stretching frequencies, and also how the substitutent X affects the structures of XC/sub 6/H/sub 4/COOH molecules in the gas phase. For this purpose, they have analyzed the changes in the ..gamma..(OH) and ..gamma..(C=O) frequencies in the IR spectra of aromatic carboxylic acid isomers XC/sub 6/H/sub 4/COOH in the gas phase (X = NO/sub 2/, NH/sub 2/, Cl, Br, I, CH/sub 3/, OCH/sub 3/, OH, COOH) and have compared them with several thermodynamic parameters and with Hammet substituent constants.
