From 2nd international congress for pressure vessel and piping technology; San Antonio, Texas, USA (1 Oct 1973). See CONF731003-P2. One of the problems relating to fatigue strength of a welded joint containing a weld defect is the evaluation of propagation life of a crack started from the defect. The propagation behavior of a fatigue crack from a deliberately introduced internal weld defect in 100 mm thick transverse joint of A533B steel was examined by a betatron, and the propagation rate was analyzed. It was observed that the propagation rates from an internal weld defect were higher than for a through- thickness notch at a given range of stress intensity. (auth)
