Low-cycle fatigue strength of piping components

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4428907

From 2nd international congress for pressure vessel and piping technology; San Antonio, Texas, USA (1 Oct 1973). See CONF731003-P2 To assess the low-cycle fatigue strength of the piping components such as elbows and branch connections, the following experiments were performed: strain controlled push- pull low-cycle fatigue tests on smooth hour-glass type specimens and grooved cylinder specimens of Type 304 stainless steel, and load-controlled or displacement-controlled low-cycle fatigue tests on elbows and branch connections of 12 in. dia and 1/4 to 3/8 in. wall thickness Type 304 ss with cyclic in-plane bending moment loading. Based on the results of the works, the current ASME Code procedures for low-cycle fatigue design for primary-plus-secondary stress intensity range above 3S/sub m/ are assessed. (auth)
