Design of very high pressure vessels for repeated pressure applications

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4439984
From 2nd international congress for pressure vessel and piping technology; San Antonio, Texas, USA (1 Oct 1973). See CONF731003-P2. The technological application of high pressure involves the design of components which will safely contain the high pressure medium throughout service life. High pressures mean that high material stresses will be present in some areas so there is a possibility of excessive deformation. If the pressure application is repeated, the high stresses can lead to fatigue failure. The deformation and fatigue behavior of simple cylindrlcal vessels at pressures up to 96 Ton f/in./ sup 2/ (14.8 kb) are described. These studies indicate the parameters whlch control fatigue failure in such vessels, on the basis of which the evolution of more complex, fatigue resistant designs is discussed. Finally, test results on several complex vessels are presented which show the extent to which vessel performance is improved and the degree to which this improvement depends on the materials used.
