Fracture analysis in areas of high nominal strain
From 2nd international congress for pressure vessel and piping technology; San Antonio, Texas, USA (1 Oct 1973). See CONF731003-P2. The fracture analysis of thick-walled pressure vessels operating outside the conventional limit of linear elastic fracture mechanics is considered. Particular attention is given to small cracks in regions of local plasticity. An elastic-plastic finite element analysis of cracks emanating from a hole in a plate under uniform tension forms the basis for an assessment of the elastic stress intensity factor, crack opening displacement, and J contour integral approaches. Recommendations are presented for the fracture analysis of cracks at plastic strain concentrations. (auth)
