How companies fare through deregulation

Journal Article · · Electricity Journal
OSTI ID:443477

The electric utility industry must learn from past deregulation mistakes in order to develop successful corporate structures, services, and technologies that will succeed in a competitive environment. Failure to act will leave the average utility with less than a 50-50 chance of survival five years after deregulation commences. Most examinations of deregulation focus on its political aspects as well as its impacts on consumers, labor relations and safety. There are very few, if any, discussions about how companies themselves change. This article examines trends in the airline industry before and after deregulation. It concentrates on key indicators (e.g., internal structure, management team, employee profile, strategy, products and businesses, profitability) at discrete points in time. The conclusions point to general trends that characterized those transitions including the traits of successful companies.
