For electric utilities, deregulation presents major challenges to management and labor, as it has for other industries. With cooperation from both sides, though, utilities can avoid the pitfalls of the past. The airline and telecommunications industries provide the prime lessons of the turmoil deregulation can cause. Among the most crucial factors that determines a company's success is its attitude toward its workers. Fostering a sense of partnership between utility management and workers is an essential starting point in dealing with the industry's new realities.
