Available from the Commission of European Communities, Luxembourg. As applied to a UO/sub 2/ fuel, a nuclear fuel particle according to the invention may comprise a central seed of lanthanum oxide enveloped in UO/sub 2/-powder so as to form a substantially spherical kernel. The kernel may then be coated by one or more layers of fission-product-retaining material comprising layers of pyrocarbon and preferably one layer of silicon carbide. The lanthanum oxide acts as an oxygen getter when oxygen is liberated from fissioned uranium. (EU)
