A particle of fission-product-retaining nuclear fuel comprising a kernel of fissile nuclear fuel, and bearing one or more coatings of fission-product-retaining material reactive with oxygen, is described. The particle incorporates in close adjacency with the kernel material, an oxide of cerium, at least partially in a lower valency state which acts as a buffer for oxygen in the system. (EU)
