From international conference on the bases of the biological effects of ultraviolet radiation; Brno, Czechoslovakia (2 Oct 1972). Some pretreatments that inhibit DNA synthesis before ultraviolet irradiation simultaneously inhibit the excision number of surviving bacteria. Results of the influence of such pretreatments on the sedimentation profiles of the newly synthesized DNA after irradiation in the strains of Escherichia coli B//sub +/r thy/sup -/ trp/s up -/ Hcr/sup +/ and Hcr/sup -/ are presented. Pretreated Hcr/sup +/ cells were able to produce normal sized DNA after 90 minutes postincubation, while the Hcr/sup -/ cells were unable to do so, though the amounts of unexcised dimers were closely related to one another.
