Inhibition of thymine-dimer excision after preirradiation inhibition of DNA synthesis by cytidine
From international conference on the bases of the biological effects of ultraviolet radiation; Brno, Czechoslovakia (2 Oct The effect of preirradiation inhibition of DNA synthesis by cytidine on ultraviolet resistance and thymine- dimer excision was investigated. Pretreatment with cytidine was found to inhibit thymine-dimer excision in the cells of Escherichia coli B/r Hcr/sup +/. When this effect was combined with a simultaneous effect of amino acid prestarvation, the number of surviving cells after uv irradiation was slightly higher than in the logarithmically growing culture. However, in the former, excision was reduced to about 50%. This indicates that the cells having any excision capacity do not necessarily need to cope with dimers by excision. (auth)
