Excision of pyrimidine dimers from the DNA of uv-irradiated Proteus mirabilis wildtype and uv-sensitive mutants
ABS>From international conference on the bases of the biological effects of ultraviolet radiation; Brno, Czechoslovakia (2 Oct Two photoproducts, thymine- thymine and cytosine-thymine dimers were identified after uv-irradiation of Proteus mirabilis. It was found that 1 erg/mm/sup 2/ at 253 nm produced about 8 dimers per 10/sup 7/ nucleotides. Both photoproducts were excised at the same rate from the DNA of ultraviolet-resistant wildtype-cells, but remained in the DNA in the ultraviolet-sensitive HCR-mutants. EXR-mutants also revealed an ability to excision. The excision of the REC-mutant could not be specified, because of high DNAdegradation. In comparison with the wildtype mutants exhibit a very reduced abiliiy to excise pyrimidine dimers. (auth)
