Effect of various doses of citriphos on the survival of mice irradiated with a lethal dose of x rays

Prophylactic intraperitoneal administration of citriphos (cysteamine adenosinetriphosphate) to male mice in a dose of 700, 500, and 300 mg/kg 15 min before irradiation of the animals with x rays in a dose of 700 R resulted in survival of 79, 90, and 95% of the animals, respectively, until the 30th day after irradiation, whereas none of the control animals survived until the 3Oth day. Therapeutic administration to mice of citriphos in a dose of 500 and 700 mg/ kg (divided into four equal parts) 5, 15, 30, and 45 min after irradiation did not increase the rate of survival until the 30th day vs. that of 0% controls. However, it raised the mean length of the time of survival to 7.0 to 7.9 days from 6.0 days for controls. While most of the control animals died on the 5 to 6th day (gastrointestinal death), the lethality curve for the animals treated therapeutically extended to the 10 to 13th day, showing two peaks, one on the 5 to 6th day (gastroiniestinal death) and another on the 10 to 13th day (bone marrow death). Reports in the literature to the effect that citriphos has a therapeutic action are due to the fact that the experiments were carried out on rats. Unpublished work by the authors of this article showed that this substance actually has a therapeutic effect on irradiated rats. (JPRS)
