From third international symposium on toroidal plasma confinement; Garching, Germany (26 Mar 1973). An interpretation of the m = 2 to 4 kink-like perturbations in the constant current phase as resistive tearing modes is supported by linear stability criteria evaluated for the equilibrium current profiles typical of present tokamaks. It is shown that the mode amplitudes, and their long-time integrity, may be cxplaincd by nonlinear restraints on tearing- mode growth: nonlincar eddy currents arise near the singular surface, producing j x B forces which replace the inertia in opposing the vortex-flow associated with the tearing mode.
