Nonlinear theory of m = 1 kink mode

Book ·
OSTI ID:4414047
From third international symposium on toroidal plasma confinement; Garching, Germany (26 Mar 1973). An analysis is given for the m = 1 kink instability, solving for the amplitude of the helical equilibrium which is reached as a result of the linear instability and for the resulting voltage spike and radial shift of the plasma. A neighboring helical equilibriurm is found to result from the m = 1 kink instabiliiy. Negative voltage spikes and inward radial shifts are predicted as seen in the disruptive instability'' but the predicted signals are too small. One interesting feature of the solution is a current sheet (zero thickness magnetic island) at the singular surface. A tearing mode of this structure could possibly produce much larger external effects. In fact one would expect any disslpative effects which lead to a settling down into the nonlinear equilibrium to greatly affect the external signals. However, without knowing the nature of the dissipation it is not possible to estimate the magnitude or even the sign of the dissipative effects. (GE)
