The efficiency extrapolation method in coincidence counting

Journal Article · · Nuclear Instruments and Methods
A variety of nuclear species can now be measured by 4 π BETA gamma coincidence methods making use of extrapolation procedures, but without requiring detailed knowledge of decay scheme parameters. By varying the BETA -detector efficiency an experimental function is obtained giving the BETA -channel counting rate in terms of the coincidence-to- gamma -channel counting ratio, Nc/Nγ. This function is taken to give the source disintegration rate when Nc/Nγ has unit value. The techniques used in practice are reviewed and the theory examined in some detail to show how valid measures can be achieved experimentally. Since least squares data fitting plays an important role in the extrapolation procedure, methods are outlined which currently appear to be essentially free of major ambiguities.
