Self-diffusion coefflcients of carbon in a carbide of niobium was measured in the temperature range 1800 to 2200 deg C, using radioactive tracer techniques. The self-diffusion coefficients can be expressed by D* = 0.56 exp (-- 87,500/RT) (cm/sup 2/sec). Comparing the present results with the chemical diffusivities obtained by the carbide layer growth method, it is shown that the relations between self-diffusivities and chemical diffusivities of carbon in the carbides of transition metals can be explained qualitatively on the assumption that carbon diffuses in the carbide by a vacancy mechanism.
