Self-diffusion in $alpha$-Zirconium; SELBSTDIFFUSIONSVERSUCHE IN $alpha$-ZIRKON
Measurements of the self-diffusion coefflcient were made between 751 and 845 deg C on three materials different in purity and preliminary treatment. Zr/ sup 95/ was used as tracer, and, in spite of the small diffusion coefflcients of 10/sup -12/ to 10/sup -13/ cm/sup 2//sec, the classical slicing technique'' was applied. Before counting, the daughter product Nb/sup 95/ was chemically separated. The penetration curves showed at great penetration depths a tail, which cannot be traced back to volume diffusion. The results of the three materials do not vary significantly from each other within the relatively large scattering. An analysis by the least-squares method gave for the diffusion coefflcient D/sub Zr/ = 5.8 x 10/sup -4/ exp (--45500/RT) cm/sup 2//sec. The activation energy of 45500 cal/ mole was small but corresponded qualitatively with other properties as resistance and annealing mechanism of radiation damage. (tr-auth)
