DIFFUSION OF Zr$sup 95$ AND Cb$sup 95$ IN Bcc ZIRCONIUM
Chemically purified Zr/sup 95/ and Nb/sup 95/ were used in determining self-diffusion coefficients in the bcc phase of iodide zirconium over the temperature range of 900 to 1750 deg C. The temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients could not be described by the usual Arrhenius-type equation over the entire temperature range. Values of the apparent frequency factors (D/sub O/)/sub A/ and activation energies (Q)/sub A/ for ZR/sup 95/ varied from 4.8 x 10/sup -6/ to 2.5 x 10/sup -2/cm/sup 2/per sec and 20700 to 46900 cal per mole, respectively, between 900 and 1750 deg C. Similarly, for Nb/ sup 95/, values of (D/sub O/)/sub A/ and (Q)/sub A/ varied from about 1.4 x 10/ sup -5/ to 0.25 cm/sup 2/ per sec and 26500 to 56800 cal per mole, respectively. The data may be described in terms of the alpha to BETA transition temperature of 1136 deg K. (auth)
