Standard method for measuring fast-neutron flux by radioactivation of nickel

Book ·
OSTI ID:4406558
This method describes a means of measuring fast-neutron flux with the threshold reaction /sup 58/Ni(n,p)/sup 58/Co. This reaction proceeds to form two /sup 58/Co isomers with half-lives of 71.3 d and 9,2 h. Decay of the 9,2-h isomer from its metastable state to the ground state produces a final 71.3 d /sup 58/Co. Loss of /sup 58/Co and /sup 58m/Co by thermal-neutron burnout will occur in environments having thermal fluxes of 3 x 10/sup 12/ neutrons/cm/sup 2//e and above. The effective threshold energy of nickel is near that of sulfur for a fission spectrum. With suitable techniques, fission-neutron flux in the approximate range from 10/sup 3/ neutron/cm/sup 2/s to 10/sup 15/ neutrons/cm/sup 2//s can be measured, The 71.3-d half-life of /sup 58/Co offers the advantages of measuring fluence up to irradiation times of 100 is and to a minimum value in the range of 10/sup 22/ neutrons/cm/sup 2/s.
