THERMAL NEUTRON CROSS SECTIONS OF THE Co$sup 58$ ISOMERS AND THE EFFECT ON FAST FLUX MEASUREMENTS USING NICKEL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4787155
A large thermal neutron cross section for the product in a nuclear reaction used for neutron flux monitoring in reactors can lead to error. The threshold reaction Ni/sup 58/(n,p)Co/sup 58/ was utilized to measure fast neutron fluxes. The thermal neutron cross sections of the Co/sup 58/ isomers were measured as 1650 barns for the 71.3-day isomer and 140,000 barns for the 9.1-hr isomer. Tab1es of correction factors are presented.
