Nuclear magnetic resonance investigations of lithium fluoride single crystals, subjected to neutron doses of the order of 1 x 10/sup 19/ n/cm/sup 2/, revealed the presence of fluorine molecules in the crystals. The formation of molecular fluorine is discussed in the light of the collision theory dealing with the creation of Frenkel defects by elastic collisions of the alpha and tritium particles with lattice atoms. Ionizing radiation, however, is also able to produce lattice defects in alkali metal halides. The radiation damage induced by gamma rays in LiF crystals is found to be strikingly similar to that induced by neutrons. In the present paper this similarity finds additional confirmation by the evidence given for the formation of molecular fluorine in gamma -irradiated single crystals of lithium fluoride. (UK)
