Acid-catalyzed deuterium exchange

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4399299

From 1st international conference on stable isotopes in chemistry, biology, and medicine; Argonne, Illinois, USA (9 May 1973). In proceedings of the first international conference on stable isotopes in chemistry, biology, and medicine. It is demonstrated that the high temperature (>200 deg C)-dilute acid exchange method presents substantial advantages over other perdeuterrtion methods (e.g., base-catalysis, metal-catalysis, concentrated acid-catalysis) because of cost, simplicity of procedure, selectivity, freedom from steric effects and side reactions, high degree of isotope incorporation, essentially quantitative yields and most impontantly, adaptability to large-scale preparations. Among the examples given are the hydration of norbornene, deuterium exchange between aniline hydrochloride and D/sub 2/O, and exchange in benzene and its derivatives as well as in benzoic acid.
