A description of the steam generating equipment at Rajasthan Power Plant, India, consisting of eight steam generators is given. The design data of some of the heat exchangers used in the reactor building are presented. Monel is the material used for the tubes and the channel covers are of carbon steel and welded to the heavy water headers. The thermal design of the preheater section and steam generating section are also given. The mechanical design has been as per section VIII and section III of ASME code. A complete stress analysis has been carried out for various conditions of operations and transient cycles. The welded tube end joint having minimum ''leak path'' was selected and the destructive testing of large number of sample welds was carried out. Special welding equipment was developed for making the tubes and welds. Special techniques were employed for dissimilar metal welding. Dye-penetrant, magnaflux, radiographic, and ultrasonic methods were adopted for the inspection of these welds. (INIS) While substantially all equipment required for the first unit of Rajasthan Atomic Power Project were imported, decisions were taken to organize the manufacture of some of the auxiliary equipment in India with a view a gain adequate experience preparatory to taking langer responsibilities for future power reactors. The second unit of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Project represents a further major effort towards Indian manufacture of most of the nuclear equipment and large amount of equipment required for the conventional portion of the plant. The Madras Atomic Power Project derives the benefits of this effort and the experience gained in this effort is presented. A list of major equipment planned for supply from Indian sources for the various reactor units in RAPP and MAPP is presented. Employment of adequate engineering personnel, management coordination with the manufacturers, development of techniques for production control, and prompt communication between the purchaser and manufacturers are some of the methods developed for controlling the schedules and the cost of nuclear equipment.
