Problems in the manufacture of steam surface condensers for nuclear power stations

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4377665
>The problems encountered in the manufacture of steam surface condensers for the Rajasthan reactors are discussed. Some of these are: i) welding of 10' x 10' x 3'- thick square flanges with constant effects to minimize ine weld distortion, ii) manufacture of expansion joints wherein welding of very thin plates into an intricate shape in involved, iii) drilling of a large number of support plates especially in the absence of tube sheets, and iv) fabrication of water-boxes of odd shapes. The confidence developed and the experience gained by the Indian industries in the manufacture or large steam surface condensers is proved by the fact that the RAPP-1 condenser could not be fabricated in the country but the PAPP-2 condensers have been fabricated completely indigenously. Presently, preparatory work for manufacture of condensers for the Madras Atomic Power Project is in progress. (INIS)
