Obtaining powders of commercial borides of titanium, zirconium, chromium, and tungsten by the boron-carbide method (in Russian)
The boron-carbide method is the most popular of all the known ways for obtaining borides of refractory metals. The dependence of chemical composition of titanium, zirconium, chromium diborides and the tungsten boride W/sub 2/B/sub 5/ on the following production technique parameters was investigated: temperature and exposure time, rate of temperature rise to the optimal level, and composition of gaseous medium in the furnace. The temperatures 1900 and 1800 deg C are established to be optimal, the former for TiB/sub 2/ and ZrB/sub 2/, the latter for CrB/sub 2/ and W/sub 2/B/sub 5/. The r ate of temperature rise to the optimal one has no practical effect on the chemical composition. The exposure time depends on the loading weight and volume of the furnace reactive space. Converted gas can entirely replace hydrogen when obtaining the borides. Besides, the borides are possible to be obtained without a specially created gaseous medium in the furnace, i.e., in the carbon oxide medium, which is a gaseous product of the reaction. (auth)
