ABS>The dependence of ZrB/sub 2/ chemical composition obtained by carbonthermal method, on temperature and holding period, rate of temperature rise to optimum, charge composition; and gaseous medium composition in the furnace was investigated. It was found that the temperature 2000 deg C with 20 to 30% excess of B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ in the charge is optimal for obtaining ZrB/sub 2/ powder of technical purity. Rate of the temperature rise to optimum with holding period above 60 min has no practical influence on the chemical composition of the product. The holding period depends on the loading weight and volume of the reactive space of the furnace. The converted gas may be used instead of hydrogen when obtaining ZrB/sub 2/. (auth)
