The Spin and Quadrupole Moment of O17

Journal Article · · Physical Review
Measurements of the quadrupole splitting caused by the O17 nuclear spin in the J =1 →2 transition of the O17C12S32 pure rotational spectrum show that the spin of O17 is 5/2 and its quadrupole coupling constant is -1.32±0.07 mc. From this coupling constant, the quadrupole moment of the O17 nucleus can be estimated as Q =-5 ×10-27 cm2. O17 appears to fit the extreme single particle model of the nucleus exceptionally well.
