Reductive dehalogenation of aqueous carbon tetrachloride by sodium dithionite
- Oklahoma State Univ., Stillwater, OK (United States)
The search for methods aimed at eliminating halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons from polluted water has become an area of intensive study in the environmental and health sciences. Considerable interest has been focused on the reductive dehalogenation of chlorinated hydrocarbons produced in large scale for industrial uses. To these ends, methods involving bacterial cultures, enzymes, minerals, transition metals, bimetalic systems, electrodes, sonolysis and photolysis, have been reported in the literature as possible alternatives that display a wide variety of characteristic reaction rates, products and conditions. The generation of toxic reaction byproducts in considerable amounts, however, limits the number of feasible methods to only a few with potential application to real problems. In this communication we report the anaerobic reductive dehalogenation of aqueous carbon tetrachloride (CCl{sub 4}) carried out by sodium dithionite (Na{sub 2}S{sub 2}O{sub 4}).
